Assessment About California Teaching Performance Assessment (CalTPA)

​

The CalTPA is an assessment required by all teacher candidates in California seeking preliminary teaching credentials in multiple or single subject programs. In completing the CalTPA, teachers are given opportunities to develop, refine, and show teaching knowledge skills and abilities during the teacher preparation program. The focus on the CalTPA is to ensure that potential certified teachers are able to plan, instruct, and assess with respect to the Teaching Performance Expectations (TPEs), which are a set of standards that clearly outline what beginning teachers should know and be able to do before receiving a Preliminary credential.

 

The CalTPA gives teachers opportunities to show competency related to the pedagogical sequence of plan, teach and assess, reflect, and apply. In completing the CalTPA, the students are required to plan lessons, show instruction, annotate video clips, and write narratives. The candidates are required to complete two full instructional cycles, and each cycle involves the full instructional cycle of plan, teach and assess, reflect, and apply. The two CalTPA cycles are:

Cycle 1: Learning About Students & Planning Instruction – This cycle focuses on an engaging content-specific lesson based on students’ assets and needs, including prior academic knowledge, interests, and developmental considerations.

​

Cycle 2: Assessment-Driven Instruction – This cycle is focused on the interaction between standards, assessment, and instructional decision-making. The cycle focuses on a teacher’s ability to design assessments and apply what is learned in those assessments in their subsequent lessons.
